Content used to be so loyal. In the traditional media days, content was monogamous: it stuck with one partner for life. My content was always my content. And your content was always your content.
But not anymore. In the digital world, content really gets around. It shows no loyalty anymore. It will go home with just about anyone who grabs at it. My content becomes your content, or his content, or their content.
We try to keep content from being so sleazy, but we can’t control it anymore. It does what it wants even when we write up new rules or try to teach it a lesson. We can get as upset and angry with content as we want, but it won’t make things go back to how they were. The days when content was loyal are long gone.
We do need a certain amount of restrictions to keep content more loyal, but we also have to recognize the new environment. Content will never be loyal like it used to; it’s a new world out there, and content has already adapted to it. We are now the ones who need to evolve our mentality and expectations.
